Topic Areas

Study Topics and Projects
The activities within the Topic Areas are supervised by Topic Chairmen appointed by the Technical Committee. The Topic Chairmen automatically become members of the Bureau in an ex-officio capacity. The tasks under each Topic Area have been divided into specific projects and each project is led by a Project Manager. The Project Managers act as Rapporteurs and seek input from experts within the ABU membership and if necessary, from outside.

  • P/RTA - Radio & Television Archiving; Metadata for archiving in non-alphabetic languages

  • P/MDAL (Loudness) - Metering of Digital Audio Level

  • P/UHDTV - Ultra-high Definition TV

  • P/RFPD - Requirement for FPD as master monitor in HDTV programme production environment

  • P/SN - Broadcast Systems for people with special needs

  • P/ITPS – IT (file) - based Production System


Topic Area Transmission

Is responsible for studies related to Transmission which consists of the following projects:

  • T/DTTB - DTTB Coverage and Frequency Planning languages

  • T/MMB - Mobile Digital Multimedia Broadcasting

  • T/API - Standardisation of API for DTTB including Multimedia

  • T/SCS-MCS - Digital Radio Signal and Multi-Channel Simulcast Systems

  • T/N-CP – Delivery using Network and Content Protection

  • TS/MS - Management Studies

  • TS/OBSD - On-line Broadcast Skills Development Facility

  • TS/LCIE - Low-Cost Infrastructure and Equipment

  • TS/TxCA – New Transmitter Technologies in Radio and TV Broadcasting

    and New Combiners and Antenna Systems

     


Topic Area Spectrum - WRC-12 Issues

Is responsible for studies related to Spectrum-WRC-12 Issues and consists of the following projects:

  • S/SH-ENG - Worldwide/regional harmonization of spectrum for ENG: WRC-12 Agenda item 1.5

  • S/BSS-21 GHz - Spectrum usage of 21.4-22 GHz band for BSS and the associated feeder-link bands in Regions 1 and 3: WRC-12 Agenda item 1.13

  • S/UHF-Sharing - Sharing studies between mobile and other services in the 790-862 MHz band in Regions 1 and 3, to ensure the adequate protection of allocated services: WRC-12 Agenda item 1.17

  • S/S R DEVICES - Impact of emissions from short-range devices on radio communication services: WRC-12 Agenda item 1.22

  • S/SOFTWARE DR - Introduction of software-defined radio and cognitive radio systems: WRC-12 Agenda item 1.19

  • S/IBS – Other Issues Impacting Broadcasting Services at WRC-11: New applications in the radio location service and review allocations or regulatory provisions in the range 30 300 MHz: WRC-12 Agenda item 1.14

  • S/Radio-26MHz - STechnical Parameters and Regulatory Considerations for Local Radio Broadcasting in 26 MHz band

  • S/SRSTV - Frequency Requirements for Sound and Television Broadcasting ABU-HFC – Coordination of Shortwave Schedules (Continuing Activity)
